The event featured over 50 artists, two sound stages and food and fun for the entire family! A big part of the day was the opportunity to participate in the arts through "hands-on" experiences for the young and the young at heart!

Special guest entertainer was Jaye Herrod, Miss Fountain City 2008. She took the stage at 9:45 a.m. and entertained the crowds with broadway and spiritual music. A talented pianist, Herrod proved that her talent doesnt' stop with the ivory keys. She did a marvelous redition of "For Good" from the musical, "Wicked".

She then joined in the fun by serving as a Celebrity Artists for the Prattauga Art Guild. Painters were given large canvases by which to create their masterpieces. These will be auctioned off in May at the Prattville CityFest. Proceeds will go to the City's arts programs.

After leaving the stage, Herrod joined internationally renowed artist, Charlie "TinMan" Lucas, and helped children create pieces of art out of junk items. Many were more concerned with her crown than the wires they were twisting. So, Herrod fielded lots of questions from the children while helping them create exciting art to take home.

Miss Fountain City Visits East Memorial Christian

On March 29th, Miss Fountain City - Jaye Herrod, was the guest speaker at the chapel service for East Memorial Christian Academy in Prattville. Under the direction of Lynn Stitchcomb Pollingue, this comedy is definitely one that you don't want to miss. William Harper and Allen Herrod do a superb job of playing some 20 characters, from the tiny and small-minded town of Tuna, Texas. The two actors do a wonderful job, not only defining each character's own personality but also in managing to pull of numerous costume changes in the process. You'll laugh; you'll cry ;and you'll hang on for a wild ride, as the plot takes some unexpected turns along the way to Tuna.

Tickets are $8 in advance at Bank Trust in downtown Prattville or $10 at the door. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.— Helen Keller, Alabama native and American social activist, public speaker and author (1880-1968)

Good character is something that Jaye Herrod, Miss Fountain City 2008, knows all too well. To date, she has promoted her community service platform, The Pursuit of Character, by volunteering thousands of hours to service projects and character education within the state of Alabama and her community of Prattville.

Jaye was recently named the spokesperson for the Autauga County/ City of Prattville’s Youth Character Coalition, after spending months developing this new program for Autauga County youth. The teens are selected from the private and public high schools throughout Autauga County. They will come together each month to discuss the character trait of the month. Their charge will then be to take that trait back to their schools and share it will the students, including those in service and social clubs. The Youth Character Coalition will also work together on a community service project, to be completed later in the year.

By way of the Youth Character Coalition, Herrod also serves with the Autauga/Prattville Character Coalition. The City was appointed a “Character City” last year, only the second city in the state of Alabama, by the national Character Council – Character First. The nationwide program’s goal is to educate the communities across the United States on 49 good character traits over a four year course. This is done by promoting the character trait of the month to schools, businesses, churches and families in the community. Traits include: honesty, compassion, obedience, joyfulness, availability and generosity.

She recently met with Greg Meadows of WIQR radio to record four months of public service announcements which will run each month on the radio station. The PSA’s will address the traits of the month: compassion, persuasiveness, wisdom and alertness.

When she and Miss Fountain City Director, DiDi Henry, began to plan the radio announcements, they were both struck with the irony that the character trait for the month of March is compassion. This seemed so appropriate since Prattville residents have shown compassion and have been the recipient of that compassion, with last month’s devastating tornado. “Even during this very trying time, neighbors reached out to helped neighbors and thousands of volunteers came to Prattville to help us put our town and our lives back together. Compassion was being demonstrated everywhere we turned. I am just so very proud of our community,” Herrod said.

To book Miss Fountain City, Jaye Herrod, to speak to your school, organization and church about The Pursuit of Character, please call 358-0297. Miss Fountain City is a preliminary to the Miss Alabama/Miss America scholarship pageants. The free event is open to the public and will run from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The planners for the event are currently recruiting new artists to participate in this family-fun event. According to Gray Price, president of the Prattville Council for the Creative & Performing Arts, they are searching for additional artist who specialize in all types of art including primitive, fine arts, pottery, wood carving, stitchery, musical instrument creation, glass blowing and more. However, Price did stress that it is not an arts and crafts show. All work must be original. Along with it being a selling show, the artists can get a significant reduction on their booth fee by demonstrating their art to the public. A student at the University of Mobile, the Prattville native checked in with her parents, Allen and Denise Herrod, to make sure that they were okay. Upon learning that her family was indeed safe, she attended Dauphin Way Baptist Church services that evening in Mobile and began to tell friends of what had just transpired in her hometown.

The next day, as Herrod poured over photos of a tornado-torn Prattville that were splashed across The Mobile Register, she knew that she had to do something to help her hometown begin to heal from the tragedy. “I felt so helpless being so far away. I was actually sitting in class thinking about what I could do to help my community heal,” Herrod said. “Then it dawned on me to let my pen be a source of comfort.” She purchased over 400 note cards and began hand-writing notes of support to the people who were affected by the storm.
“Other students at the University and my church heard about what I was doing and they wanted to help, as well. It was really amazing! Although it is a very simple thing, I hope it will really help those people not feel so alone.” According to Herrod, each note is different and sites different Bible verses that lend comfort and support.

Last weekend, Herrod returned to Prattville with a large bag of letters and a friend to help her distribute them in the Silver Hills area. UM freshman, Sarah Wilkinson, of Enterprise was on third hall at Enterprise High School last year, when the tornado ripped her high school apart. She survived without injury, but lost a very close friend in the process. “I wanted to come to Prattville and tell people that it will take some time, but each day will get better. Your life will be put back together, just have faith. Don’t try to do it alone. Let other’s help you,” Wilkinson said. She wears a blue arm bracelet that says, “Always Remember”. “When you survive something like this, you don’t forget but it does make you realize what is important,” she added.

To learn more about Jaye Herrod’s preparations for her trip to Miss Alabama, visit www.MissFountainCity.com. She is available to speak to your school, church or civic club about her platform, “The Pursuit of Character”. She has been busy making numerous appearances in her hometown of Prattville. School visits have been her main focus but she has also visited area nursing homes, a P.E.E.R.’s youth court meeting, chamber functions, the Autauga County Junior Miss program and much more.

“I was honored to be selected by the judges to serve as Miss Fountain City 2008 but I will spend this year earning the title,” Herrod said. “It is a big responsibility but I am so thrilled to serve my community in this capacity,” she added.

Herrod, a full-time honor student at the University of Mobile, has a full calendar, as she juggles her responsibilities of school, school activities and her role as Miss Fountain City. She is also the outgoing Miss University of Mobile. She will give up that crown on February 2.

As part of her Miss Alabama/Miss America program, Herrod must write an essay about a national platform and give community service hours to that issue. Her platform is “The Pursuit of Character”. She has logged over 1,000 hours to this platform to date. Upcoming appearances for Herrod include the Prattville Mardi Gras parade, the Eufaula Women’s Conference, the Smith Center and Law Day.

“During the Christmas break, I had an appearance just about every day of the week and some of those appearances were back-to-back events, with two to three appearances per day. It was exhausting but so inspiring at the same time,” Herrod said. “I love going into our schools and talking with the children about the importance of character. No matter the age of the student, you can always find a way to incorporate character education into their lives.”

Herrod is available to speak to civic organizations, schools and churches. Please call 358-0297 to book your appearance with Miss Fountain City. The residents enjoyed the entertainment and wished each girl "good luck" as they go on to their state scholarship programs.

Miss Fountain City Names Spokesperson for Youth Character Council

The Pursuit of Character is the community service platform for Miss Fountain City 2008, Jaye Herrod and through the past few years, she has devoted over 1,000 hours to character education. She will continue to put that platform before the public as she serves as the spokesperson for the City of Prattville's Youth Character Council.

The City of Prattville was designated a national City of Character over a year ago and through its Prattville/Autauga Character Coaltion, it has worked with numerous businesses and schools to promote good character traits amoung its citizens. The program focuses on 49 traits including responsibility, benevolence, trustworthiness, generosity and more.

As part of the program, the adult directed council is now ready to take it further into the schools by creating a Youth Character Council. The board will be made up of sophomore high school students who show leadership abilities and who are willing to take the program back into the schools for a student-driven program.

Jaye Herrod has stepped up as the spokesperson for the Youth Council and will conduct the introductory meeting and will meet with the group over the course of the next year to oversee their progress. Mary Beth Prichard, Prattville Autauga Character Coalition Director, said, "We are thrilled to have Jaye as our official spokesperson. She believes strongly in this concept and has worked countless hours on her own to bring the concept of character into our schools and community."

As Miss Fountain City 2008, Herrod will represent the City of Prattville at the Miss Alabama Pageant this June. Invited by their teacher, Misty Harris, Jaye served as a guest reader to the students and talked with them about character, as part of her platform, The Pursuit of Character.

Herrod read the book, "You Are Special", by Max Lucado, which reinforces the belief that what is important is that a person is beautiful on the inside and that individuals should not worry about what other's think. She answered a lot of questions about her crown and her role as Miss Fountain City. Herrod explained that she was selected to be an ambassador for the City of Prattville and will represent the City at the Miss Alabama Pageant this June. "With this crown comes a lot of responsibility. I was given the opportunity to wear this crown but I will work hard all year to earn it, " she said.

Herrod regularly will make appearances throughout the year to speak to churches, schools and civic organizations about "The Pursuit of Character". She will also make numerous appearances for the City of Prattville and the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Herrod is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Herrod of Prattville. This year's grand marhsal is Lt.Daryl Mangrum, of the Prattville Police Dept. Mangrum, who is in charge of the local police department's youth services section, was diagnosed three years ago with terminal cancer.

Mangrum, who spent 23 years as a security policeman with the U.S. Air Force before joining the Prattville Police Department 12 years ago, fights every day to help children make decisions that will keep them from a life of crime. Even though he battles his disease daily, the kids that he helps are the reason he makes it out of bed each day.

"We are thrilled to have Daryl as this year's grand marshal. He is a shining example of putting others before self and is a walking inspiration to all of us", said Mayor Jim Byard, Jr.

"Three years ago, I was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma,", Mangrum said. "My doctor told me that there is only a 4 percent survival rate, worldwide. He said I should go home, take medical retirement, and get ready to die." Mangrum didn't take that advice. "When you're diagnosed with a terminal disease, you've got to have a reason to get up, and you've got to have some place to go," he said. "You can't sit home and feel sorry for yourself. When I get up in the morning and put my uniform on, I'm enjoying myself." The 52-year-old officer, who was told he would not live to see his 50th birthday, said that it is often difficult to ignore the pain he suffers daily as he carries out his duties while taking 800 milligrams of oral chemotherapy.

The parade will follow the new parade route which was used for the City's Christmas parade in December. The lineup will begin at the Autauga County Courthouse. From there it will take a left on 4th Street, a left on Washington Street, a right on Wetumpka Street, a right on Northington Street, a right on Main Street and return to the courthouse. The route has increased by half a mile, due to the large number of parade spectators.

Food vendors will set up at the Bank Trust/Partners In Pediatrics parking lot at Noon. Live Dixieland jazz music will be performed by Swing 'N Dixie and the Prattville Pops Jazz Ensemble.

Parade and vendor applications are available at Prattville City Hall, the Prattville Special Events/Cultural Arts Office or online at http://www.prattville.com/. However, she does know that finding clothes that don't "bare all" are available. This is the message she recently shared with young ladies at Tri-County Christian School.
"Your bodies are your own and they don't have to be on display for you to be attractive, smart and fashionable. We live in a Brittany Spears world but looking at her life today, she hasn't gotten very far with her fashioins or her principles," Herrod told the audience of over fifty 6th through 12th grad girls at the Prattville private school. "Tops cut down to there and skirts cut to to here, don't make the girl," Herrod added.
Herrod presented her discussion on modesty as part of her platform, "The Pursuit of Character". As Miss Fountain City 2008, she will represent the City of Prattville at the Miss Alabama Pageant this June. The two passions came together recently during a visit to Prattville Christian Academy. Miss Herrod was invited to be a guest reader to PCA's pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grade classes.

"My mother is a teacher and I plan on teaching, once I receive my degree from the Universty of Mobile", Herrod said. "I love interacting with the children and answering their questions. Of course, we discuss the book I read to them but most questions are about my Miss Fountain City crown".

Herrod read the book, "You Are Special" by Max Lucado, which emphasizes an imporant message to people from pre-kindergarten to 105 years old. "What matters most is what's on the inside and that God made us, so we are all special", Herrod said. The message of staying true to one's self rings true throughout the book, as the main character stuggles not to believe the labels that the world trys to place on him. This message is also a part of Herrod's community service platform, "The Pursuit of Character". She has donated over 800 hours of her time and talents to this issue to date.

The children had a lot to say about the shiny silver crown, atop Herrod's head, with the main questions being WHY is she wearing it and did she buy it at Libby Lu's Boutique?

She is a full-time student at The University of Mobile, where she is pursuing a degree in music. Herrod is the third young lady to wear the crown of Miss Fountain City.

MIss Fountain is a preliminary to the MIss Alabama/Miss America system. This wonderful scholarship opportunity is available to young ladies who live, work or go to school full -time in Autauga County. If the contestant is away a college, her parents must currently reside in Autauga County to be eligible. Applications are available online or by calling the number listed below.

The Pageant Committee has announced that they are currently recruiting new sponsors for this year's event. Last year, they collected over $5,000 in cash scholarships from local business leaders. Every contestant was offered a minimum scholarship just for competing in the program. The winner, Raquel Martin, earned over $2,000 in college scholarships for her participation.

The committee is also searching for new prize donors. Over 100 sponsorship requests have been sent out to area businesses, asking for prize donations. When Miss Fountain City is preparing for her trip to Miss Alabama, she is using her own resources over and above what is donated. That means her own car, oil changes and gasoline, her own wardrobe, manicures, pedicures, accessories, even the things she needs for her room, during her week stay at Miss Alabama. Gift cards to local merchants are needed and appreciated.

If you know of a business who would like to make a donation, please call the Special Events office at 358-0297 or visit http://www.missfountaincity.com/ for more information.

Miss Teen Fountain City Pageant Date Set for September

The Miss Fountain City Outstanding Teen Pageat will be held on Saturday, September 29th at Prattville Junior High School. So, I suggest you get your tickets now and grab a front row seat. You don't want to miss a thing. Great music and a larger- than- life cast will keep you entertained the whole evening.

For those who aren't familiar with the play (and movie) Little Shop is a tongue -in -cheek horror themed musical, much like those of the 1950's. The show takes place on Skid Row, in a little flowershop that is on the slide. Seymour, a mousey floral assistant discovers a unique plant (picture a sort of Venus Fly Trap,) that he names Audrey II , who quickly develops a taste for blood. The more blood, the bigger...and more demanding it grows. After a sneak preview, all I can say is "wow"! This is a very energetic, entertaining show that is just this side of "quirky", must like the original! Under the direction of Todd Arron and Stacey Little, the ensemble is the embodiment of the original production. Several great voices shine in the musical numbers, enough to give chills to those who listen.

Tickets are a little more expensive than the usual theatre's offering but worth every penny. This is by far the group's most elaborate set, complete with a giant "Venus Fly Trap" which sports a very nasty attitude. Tickets can be purchased at People's Bank in downtown Prattville during reguarl banking hours. They are priced $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Call the bank for more information at 361-3029. Play dates are: July 26-29, August 3-5 and 10-12. Evening performances begin at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.

Little Shop is a little over the top, as it is meant to be played and WOBT does a great job in delivering a quality production. You don't want to miss it.

High Heel Boot Camp helps put Contestants In Step

The Miss Fountain City Pageant committee has teamed with the Autauga County Junior Miss Board of Directors to host the first High Heel Boot Camp on Saturday, July 21st. Thanks to both girls for a wonderful evening of entertainment.

Miss Fountain City Attends Autograph Party

Miss Fountain City 2007 ,Raquel Martin, joined the other 47 contestants competing in this year's Miss Alabama Pageant at an autograph party at Brookwook Mall in Birmingham on Sunday, June 3rd. The movie, "Big Fish" directed by Tim Burton will be the featured film. The mega 40 ft. screened event will take place under the stars at Overlook Park, which is located behind Daniel Pratt Elementary School, in Prattville. The movie will begin at dark. The movie night is part of the City of Prattville’s 2nd annual Fountain City Arts Festival, which will be held on March 31st. Admission is free to the public. Food vendors will be set up at the park by 6:30 p.m. No alcoholic beverages are allowed.

Special Events Network, from Atlanta, Georgia, will arrive Thursday afternoon to set up for the event. According to Bruce Pieske, director of the outdoor movie company, this type of venue is extremely popular across the United States. “You can watch a movie at home on the sofa but until you’ve experienced it outdoors, under the stars, you really haven’t truly experienced a movie”, he said. “We are thrilled about coming to Prattville to provide this unique style of family-fun.” Special Events Network has produced over 500 events throughout the southeast.

Mayor Jim Byard, Jr. said, “Big Fish is a heartwarming tale of a relationship between a father and son and the father’s larger-than-life experiences. The movie is very entertaining and one that I’m sure our citizens will enjoy.” He added, “Good community partners like Larry Puckett Chevrolet and River Bank & Trust and our neighbors at Kyser Furniture and WSFA have made this fun-filled evening possible. The City is very appreciative of these sponsors and we thank them for supporting this exciting event.”

This year, the Fountain City Arts Festival honoree is prominent author, Daniel Wallace. Wallace is the author of the 1998 novel Big Fish, A Novel of Mythic Proportions.

“When we were selecting our honoree for this year’s festival, Mr. Wallace’s name quickly rose to the top of our list,” said Prattville Council for the Creative and Performing Arts President, Gray Price. “He is an acclaimed writer from Alabama, who helped put the River Region on Hollywood’s map, with the filming of the movie, Big Fish.” The movie was filmed in parts of Prattville, Wetumpka and Montgomery and according to Wallace, his fictitious town of Ashton, Alabama was actually a combination of the cities, Prattville and Wetumpka. While the tall tales of Big Fish were glorified on the silver screen, one thing that was not a tale of mythic proportions was that during the ten month filming of Big Fish, the River Region collected over $25 million in additional revenues from the making of the movie.

Born in Birmingham, Wallace lived there until he moved to Georgia to attend Emory University and then on to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, which he left shortly before graduating. After living in Nagoya, Japan for two years, he moved back to Chapel Hill, where he worked in a bookstore, and began to write. Thirteen years and five unpublished novels later, Algonquin Books bought Big Fish.

Wallace also wrote Ray in Reverse (2000) and The Watermelon King (2003). His stories have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies, including The Yale Review, The Massachusetts Review, Shenandoah and Glimmer Train, and his illustrated work has appeared in the L.A. Times and Italian Vanity Fair. Big Fish as been translated into 18 languages. He lives in Chapel Hill, with his wife, Laura, and his son, Henry and teaches Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina. His latest novel is due this summer.

Wallace will attend the Fountain City Arts Festival on March 31st for a book signing and to talk with festival-goers about his writings, how he got published and to answer any questions about his literature. Books will be available onsite, while they last, from Capitol Books and News. Wallace will also be honored at a dinner the evening prior to the festival on March 30th at the Marriott – Legends in Prattville. According to DiDi Henry, Special Events Director for the City of Prattville, the evening promises to be exciting and entertaining. “I’m sure that this will be one of the top events in the River Region this year. Seating for the dinner will be limited and tickets are on sale at the Prattville Cultural Arts Center. The price is $40 per person. For more information, call 358-0297.

The City of Prattville's 2nd annual Fountain City Arts Festival has been named a Top 10 Event for the month of March, by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism & Travel. According to the bureau, the year 2007 has been deemed The Year of Alabama Arts. The festival is set for Saturday, March 31st from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pratt Park, in downtown Prattville. Admission is free. The Fountain City Arts Festival offers a fun-filled day of exposure to all art forms. Artists include sculptures, potters, woodcarvers and more. The festival will also highlight various types of music, dance, literature and theatre. Price promises that there will be something of interest for the entire family. “Last year, our festival honored famed artist, Charlie “Tin Man” Lucas. The festival was a great success and because of the attention it has received this year, more artists are calling to inquire about the venue. Everyone will enjoy experiencing the arts on so different levels,” Price said.

The Fountain City Arts Festival is made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The event is sponsored by The City of Prattville, WSFA, Larry Puckett Chevrolet, Kyser Furniture, River Bank & Trust, The Prattville Council for the Creative & Performing Arts and The Prattauga Art Guild. With 118 entries, representing approximately 3,000 participants, the parade rolled out at 6:00 p.m., to an estimated crowd of over 20,000! This year's theme: All I Want For Christmas Is...., offered many creative and entertaining designs. The winners for best floats were: 1st place - Carol Lemon Realty, 2nd place - Pentecostals of Prattville and 3rd place - Kreatif Hair Design. The judges said that they really had a hard time selecting the best of the best because there were just so many good entries this year. There were far more actual float entries, than in the past.

The crowd was entertained by the Prattville High School Marching Band, the Marbury North Star, Marching Band and even Elvis, with his very own Hound Dog! Mayor Byard, along with his wife, Beverly and children, Marylise and James, cruised down Main Street in style - in a white limousine. Miss Fountain City, Raquel Martin, enjoyed a ride in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage. However, Santa stold the show, as he arrived in his traditional transportation - a Prattville Fire Department fire engine.

Christmas Comes To Prattville

The City of Prattville celebrated its annual Christmas tree lighting on Tuesday, November 28th.
